Good people. Good places. Good purpose.

Helping purpose-led organisations reimagine spaces where people, purpose and place flourish together.

I've always believed that spaces matter.

Not because of the buildings themselves, but because of what happens within them.

A conversation over coffee. A room filled with laughter. A community gathering after a difficult season. A place where someone feels seen, welcomed and known for the very first time. I've spent much of my life creating those kinds of spaces.

Sometimes through hospitality. Sometimes through events. Sometimes around a beautifully set table. Sometimes inside churches, halls and community buildings that had quietly lost their sense of purpose.

Again and again, I've discovered that when we intentionally care for a space, we create opportunities for people to connect, belong and flourish.

That belief has become Spaces for Good.

Rather than being a separate business, Spaces for Good is the way I partner with churches, charities and purpose-led organisations to help them notice the incredible potential that already exists within the places they steward.

Because often, the answer isn't building something new.

It's seeing what is already there with fresh eyes.

Every space tells a story.

Some spaces feel warm the moment you walk through the door. Others feel forgotten.

Some buildings are full of activity every day of the week, while others sit quietly waiting for someone to imagine what could be possible.

I've walked into countless spaces over the years and found myself asking simple questions.

  • Who could gather here?
  • What stories could unfold in this room?
  • How might this place become a gift to the wider community?

Those questions have led me into conversations with churches, community leaders and organisations across Australia who are longing to see their spaces become places of welcome, hospitality and connection once again. Not because bigger is better.

But because every community deserves places where people feel they belong.

It's never just about the building.

The work I do isn't really about buildings.

It's about people.

It's about helping leaders discover new possibilities for the places they've been entrusted with, creating environments that feel welcoming, developing sustainable ways for spaces to serve both mission and community, and building the systems that allow those places to thrive for years to come.

Sometimes that begins by moving furniture.

Maybe it's noticing the way people arrive at your front door.

Or, sometimes it's asking bigger questions about purpose, partnerships and how your space can become more deeply connected to the community around it.

Often, it's a little of all of those things.

Wherever we begin, my hope is always the same—that together we'll create spaces where people feel welcomed, connected and genuinely at home.

How we might work together

Every community is different and every building has its own story. That's why I don't believe in one-size-fits-all solutions. Instead, I offer a range of ways we can work together, depending on where you are in the journey.

Spaces For Good Partnership

Sometimes transformation doesn't happen in a single conversation. It unfolds over months as ideas become reality. For organisations looking for ongoing support, I offer a partnership where I walk alongside your team as you activate your space, strengthen your community and bring your vision to life. It's less about consulting from the sidelines and more about journeying together.

The story behind it all.

Everything I share through Spaces for Good has been shaped by lived experience. For six years I had the privilege of leading Sanctuary Canberra, transforming an underused church hall into a thriving community venue where thousands of people gathered for celebrations, workshops, business events, creative experiences and moments of connection.

It taught me so much about hospitality. About stewardship, listening well, building systems that quietly support beautiful experiences. And perhaps most importantly, it reminded me that places have the power to shape people.

Today, those lessons continue to influence every organisation I have the privilege of working alongside.

About Lauren Harkness Church Ministry in Canberra

I'd love to hear your story.

Whether you're caring for a church, leading a community organisation, dreaming about a retreat space or wondering what might be possible for an underused building, I'd love to have a conversation.

You don't need to have all the answers. Sometimes the most exciting journeys begin with a simple question."I wonder what could happen here?"

If that question has been sitting quietly in your heart, I'd love to explore it with you.

In the spirit of reconciliation, we would like to respectfully acknowledge the Ngunnawal people as the traditional custodians of the land on which we gather and also to the traditional custodians throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea and community. We pay our respect to their Elders past and present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who gather with us.
